The Standard of Living

The right for an adequate standard of living will need a minimum, that all people enjoy the necessary subsistence rights which would be having adequate food and nutrition, clothing, housing and all the necessary conditions of care when required. An essential point is that everyone should be able and without shame or unreasonable obstacles to become a full participant for ordinary and everyday interaction with other people. Which is why, people must be able to enjoy their basic needs in conditions of dignity. No person deserves to live in conditions to where the only way of how they are able to satisfy their needs is through degrading themselves or perhaps to deprive themselves of their basic freedoms through begging, forced labor or prostitution.

In a purely material term, adequate standard of living means the process of living above the poverty line of where the society concerned, which based on the World Bank includes two elements from which is the expenditure necessary in buying a minimum standard of nutrition and other basic necessities and further amount that varies from country to country, which reflects the cost of participating in the everyday life of society.

The economic, social and cultural rights are the things that instruments and establishes the principle of the progressive realization, where such principle does not exclude with immediate obligations or the steps towards this goal should be taken immediately. Another addition is on the prohibition of discrimination of any kind with regards to access to adequate food, clothing and housing on the grounds of sex, color, race, age, language, political, religion or other opinions, property, national or social origin, birth or other status with the purpose of nullifying or in impairing the equal enjoyment or the exercise of its rights, which is an immediate obligation for state parties to the major human rights treaties.

The standard of living of a person is not being determined only by himself or by his desires. It’s crucial that he considers also on what the society expects of him. It is a compromise between what he likes and what the society expects.

Quality of life in fact is a highly subjective measure of happiness, which actually is a crucial component towards various financial decisions. Factors to which plays a role in quality of life will vary based on your personal preference, but it usually includes financial security, family life, job satisfaction, safety and health. The financial decisions mostly involves trade off where quality of life is decreased in order to help save money or that the quality of life will be increase by spending more money.
