Law implies imposition by a sovereign authority and the obligation of obedience on the part of all subject to that authority. In other words, understanding a particular action requires applying the theory’s laws and deriving a solution. Unlike criminal matters and the policing of trades and markets, religious courts had no executive powers in matters of family law.
